Street Food

Just wanted to tell you about all the interesting and delicious street food here:
Roasted Corn: Corn on the cob roasted over a charcoal grill. Corn here isn't sweet and it is chewier so it is a good snack to munch on.
Mandazi: Fried Dough balls with cardomon mixed in
Fried Fish: Usually starts out as frozen Tilapia from Lake Victoria (about a 24 hour drive away from Mombasa)
Kimati: Fried Dough Balls coated in sugar
Sugar Cane: Cut up in small chunks and skinned, sugar cane is like chewing on wood soaked in sugar water--suprisingly refreshing
Passion Juice: Probably the most delicious juice I have ever had
Viazi (Potato in Swahili): Potatoes coated in a very thin batter then put in a little plastic bag topped with a vinager or tamarind sauce. Kids bite a hole in the bag and squeeze the potato out.

I have learned how to make pilau and mandazi so far and hope to learn many more dishes.

Fruit is sold from carts in the big junctions and the types vary according to the season, at the moment we have papaya, oranges, bananas, watermelon (but with lots and lots of seeds), passion fruit and pineapples but mangos will be coming back into season soon.

Last night we had a power cut and we could actually hear the sound of everything powering down. Today, the internet was out until late afternoon because they are installing a fiberoptic system in Mombasa and had to shut everyones internet off.

The library at Mwokoeni is finally starting to look like a library. We have sorted books by subject and have almost filled four bookshelves with books.

Robin- I've written in my journal every day without fail so thank you thank you thank you :)

This past weekend, we had dinner with Martha, Janet, David and Ben.... everybody is following your steps through your blog.Megan played rugby at MIT and Hannah started playing soccer at Weslyan.
Cold, wind and rain fell on the Head of the Charles, it didn't seem to prevent them from racing.... Chantal told me that a coxain had to be removed from her boat, she was suffering from hypothermia and couldn't move!
The sun came back though and leonard Ave is beautiful.

  2. Hi Eleni,
I loved reading about the cloth. I had a friend in college who spent time in Kenya and brought me a Khanga, which I still have. She said that in the 80s they had a lot of political and public health slogans on them. I don't know if you've caught up on the sad saga of the Red Sox, out in 4 games. The Yankees are on a role, it is all very sad. Go Phillies! Alice sends her puppy kisses, although she just had her 7th birthday, so maybe they should be doggie kisses. Sounds like you are having fun and doing good.

  3. Hi Eleni,
Actually I must add to the comment by your maman... it was SNOWING during the head of the Charles on the second day. Not just a little bit, but all afternoon. The snowflakes were huge, the size of quarters! I've enjoyed this last missive and would love to see the homemade bikini's. Very clever! The CRLS girls team was in a bit of a funk but seems to have rallied with a few wins. I was able to get to two games this season. Hannah is playing some soccer at Trinity, and has discovered the gym and yoga classes. She's enjoying her classes, especially the one where she goes into a Hartford Public School to work in a classroom and do observations afterwards. She and Hannah, although only 30 minutes apart cannot find any public transportation between Trinity and Weslyan, which they find frustrating. Stay well and enjoy!
